On a windy overcast day in Driffield, Goole set out on the second game of the season against a big Driffield U13s side – and the daunting inevitability that most teams they play are going to be bigger, that’s how it’s always been in the past at Goole, and probably always will be in the future – but that’s never stopped Goole winning their share of games and so the challenge was set!

Driffield enjoyed most of the early possession as their forwards ran strongly with ball in hand and out-rucked the Goole team at breakdowns, which then gave the strong Driffield backs plenty of ball to run with. Goole tackled hard throughout taking down player after player - notably TJ Packer’s try saving effort on the Right wing - but with ball in hand the Driffield team eventually found their way through the Goole’s resolute defences which inevitably lead to early tries.

Goole then changed plan, working to offload quickly and keep the ball flowing - and away from the opposition - which resulted in plenty of good handling moves pressing the Driffield defence with the limited ball they could gain. Powerful runs from Goole into the Driffield pack from restarts allowed ground to be gained and from initially being pushed back in the scrums, Goole were now also changing this around, pushing the Driffield pack back. Unfortunately, the Goole lads didn’t quite have enough to break through the solid Driffield defence and their centres quickly punished any mistakes and took a couple more breakaway tries to close the half well ahead.

The second half saw Goole set off with a slight helping wind off the left shoulder and with optimism to get the much-needed try. Again, Driffield were strong in defence but the determined Goole side pushed hard and through a fine line side run from George Pickering, Goole eventually got over the try line – well done and well deserved for the efforts of all the team.

Driffield did go on to score again but the tenacious Goole team, although beaten and injured, never gave up, which gave the travelling parents and supporters plenty to respect and applaud throughout. Respect also to the Driffield U13s team today who were well drilled and well deserved winners.
