Goole secured the Yorkshire One League title with three games remaining with a well-deserved win at third placed Beverley on Saturday cheered on by a mass of travelling Goole supporters. Keighley’s unexpected defeat at Old Rishworthians meaning that Beverley now has the opportunity to snatch second place in the league and possible promotion. Once again, this win was a result of an impressive defence that restricted the dangerous Beverley back line to just one solitary try, just three minutes from the end of the match.
With three forced changes from the Keighley game due to the loss of Jones, Lill and Graf-Grote, this was always a game that was considered challenging despite Goole’s impressive performance in the home fixture back in November when they ran out 33 – 19 victors. Joe Grimbleby came in at off half, Charlie Walton returning from a broken hand in the second row, Oscar Sugden stepping in at centre, with Chantry making a welcome return on to the bench.
With a breeze and rain that seemed to come and go throughout the match Beverley kicked off with the breeze in their favour and immediately pushed Goole back defending two lineouts in their own 22. From the resulting play Beverley took an early lead with a straight forward penalty in front of the posts after a Goole infringement 3 – 0. From the kick off Goole pressed into the Beverley half and the home team must have thought that they had weathered the early storm when the secured the ball to kick to touch and then stole the Goole lineout that was patted back by the Beverley second row. Unfortunately for them, this was read by Goole’s impressive Jack Smith who caught the tap back to charge over for Goole’s first try out wide. The conversion was unsuccessful, but Goole now had the lead at 3 – 5 after twelve minutes. Despite Goole getting their noses in front, they were not yet in any real rhythm and conceded penalties at an alarming rate for a spell that gave the initiative to the home side. Whilst the Beverley threequarter line looked dangerous from any position, giving them attacking opportunities from close range was not what Goole needed as they looked to take the sting out of the home side.
With Beverley looking to press home the spell of territorial position and possession, the Goole defence once again came to the fore with a great turnover from Connor Walker being followed up by good work from Rhys Moore and Danny Holt to get the ball to Jack Smith in open space who once again charged at the Beverley try line only to be tackled just short of the line. Good quick ball from the breakdown enabled Goole to continue to attack they were rewarded by a second try scored by Tink Taylor after some more heavyweight work from the forwards. 3 – 10. Back came Beverley with a successful kick following yet another disappointing penalty conceded by Goole. 6 – 10 after twenty minutes.
Once again, the game entered a stop start period with Goole, being penalised for a variety of infringements that disrupted the match. As a result, they were not able to exert any prolonged pressure on the home side that were allowed to kick deep into the Goole half from the penalties to get them on the front foot. With Goole’s indiscipline continuing, there was no surprise that a yellow card resulted, and Rhys Moore left the field for the last eight minutes of the first half whilst his teammates dug deep to see out the half without conceding any points. HT 6 – 10.
The start of the second half had Goole in the ascendancy despite being a man down with Joe Grimbleby stepping into the scrum half position and a rejuggled back line. Such is the confidence of the Goole pack, they turned down a straight-forward penalty kick at goal and opted for a scrum to keep the pressure on the home team defence. With no scores during his temporary absence Rhys Moore came back on and things got back to normal as Goole’s penalty count reduced significantly. This allowed them to exert pressure on the Beverley defence that only prevented a Goole try illegally that saw a defender in the bin with a yellow card. With confidence sky high there was no thought of a kick at goal and the tap penalty restart once again had the home side desperately trying unsuccessfully to prevent the score. George Bastow diving over following an impressive rolling maul. Ryhs Moore’s successful conversion making the score 6 – 17 after just seven second half minutes.
Back came Beverley from the kick off with their three-quarter line looking dangerous in all areas of the pitch but with no real success. Goole replacements came on and off, due to knocks and treatment, as they continued to look the more likely side to score next with the forwards making ground at every phase of play. This spell of pressure was rewarded with a fourth bonus point try from Captain, Rhys Moore to stretch Goole’s lead to 6 – 22 as the game entered its final quarter.
It was all or nothing now for Beverley who threw everything that they had into obtaining that elusive try looking to run the ball at every opportunity. In the end after a run of penalties conceded by Goole, they managed to get over the try line but once again were held up by the tenacious Goole tackling. With the goal line drop out handing possession back to Beverley they finally got over in the corner for a try that would have warranted a number of re-runs if VAR had been in use. With the excellent conversion bringing the score to 13 – 22 there was a glimpse of light for the home team, but Goole shut up shop to see out the game and secure the Championship.
Make no mistake, Goole were the better side overall and thoroughly deserved the win with 4 tries to Beverley’s single score with the forwards once again winning the accolades although the back line deserve credit for the general containment of the dangerous Beverly backs. So, celebrations all round once the Keighley result was known and congratulations to the squad players and coaching team for this outstanding achievement. Goole now need to refocus to see out the remaining three league matches starting away at Leos next week. They now have the opportunity to stretch their current 9 match unbeaten league run and also to come top of the stats in a variety of other league categories. Once again there were numerous the man-of-the-match contenders but this in the end seems irrelevant when you have such quality and commitment from this entire squad of players.
